Evelina London Community Occupational Therapy

What is community occupational therapy?

Our occupational therapists (OTs) work with children and young people who have difficulties with practical skills.

We work in children's homes, nurseries, schools and child development centres.

We help children be as independent as possible, to enable them to enjoy and participate in everyday life.

Our OTs are trained to assess a child's ability to do tasks and work out where they are having difficulties.

Our OTs then consider how to teach the children skills, explore different ways of doing things, or adjust their surroundings to make a task easier.

The service we provide is not based on a child or young person's diagnosis, but on their needs.

How can occupational therapy help your child?

Occupational therapy can help your child develop skills to aid the following:

Self care - OTs can help your child learn to look after themselves. They can teach them how to wash and get dressed and how to use cutlery.

School work - OTs can help your child develop the skills needed to participate in the classroom, including writing and drawing, using scissors and other tools. They can also teach them how to organise themselves and their belongings.

Play and leisure - OTs can help your child explore and develop different types of play. Play is important as it is how children learn about themselves, others and their world.

How can your child receive occupational therapy input?

We provide help in many different ways.

We can offer you and your child advice in consultation clinics, one-to-one treatment, or group treatment sessions.

We also provide parent education groups and school training sessions.

We work as part of the community team and may see your child with other professionals who know them.

How can you get an appointment?

Your child's GP, health visitor, health professional, nursery or school can make a referral on your child's behalf. If your child has previously used the occupational therapy service, parents can re-refer their child
